Converting Steps
Step 1: Contact Us
Natural gas is the #1 heating source in the country. Converting to natural gas service may increase your home's value and save you energy dollars. Submit a Gas Availability Request or call your Nicor Gas new construction representative. We will be happy to guide you through the conversion process.
Step 2: Nicor Gas will help you make the right choices
When you speak with a Nicor representative, you'll get straight answers to questions you may have about installing and using natural gas. The distance from your structure to the existing gas main in the street will determine the complexity and potential cost of your installation. Your representative will initiate the cost benefit analysis for this project upon receipt of the information received from the Gas Availability Request. We look forward to working with you.
Step 3: Choose a contractor to install your heating system
If you're purchasing a new gas heating system or converting your existing equipment, you will need to hire an independent plumbing/heating contractor to install your new system or convert your existing system. Your chosen contractor will install your natural gas equipment or convert your existing equipment and provide the necesasry interior piping. Be sure to discuss with your contractor where the natural gas meter will be located. We strongly recommend you do not schedule the installation of your new heating system or conversion of existing equipment prior to the installation of your new gas service.
Step 4: Nicor Gas will take care of the gas service line installation
As is the case with any utility installation, yours will require time and planning. Once you sign your contract and complete the Single Meter Service Request form and the Service Agreement, we'll take it from there. First we begin by obtaining the necessary permits from your town, then call the JULIE hotline to mark out any underground utility lines in front of your property. We will then schedule the installation of the natural gas service line to the exterior of your home or business. Please refer to the Step By Step Process for further details. Now that your new gas service has been completed, it's time for your plumbing/heating contractor to install your new heating system.
